A solar power inverter works by changing a direct electrical current to an alternating current, using a whole process of electrical switching. The process is not that complicated, but there are three main different styles of solar power inverters that work in slightly different ways, including the stand-alone solar panel inverter, the synchronous solar panel inverter, and the multi-function solar panel inverters.

The first type switches direct current, or DC power from a battery over to an alternating current, or AC. This provides enough power for small personal appliances, including computers; or enough to supply the whole household if desired.

The second type of solar power inverter is the synchronous type, which allows the household to work with the power company.
